MFS Investment Management added two new fixed income ETFs to its lineup on Thursday, September 10. The launch brings new active income options to the market, offering investors exposure to short-duration corporate bonds and municipal debt. Both funds aim to provide income and capital appreciation with lower interest rate risk.
A New Take on Short-Duration Bonds
The MFS Active Short Duration Income ETF (MFSD) focuses on high-quality corporate bonds and structured debt. The fund has a net expense ratio of 25 basis points. Portfolio managers target a dollar-weighted average duration similar to the Bloomberg 1-5 Year Government/Credit Bond Index, within one year of that benchmark. This approach helps mitigate the impact of rising rates while pursuing income. Active management allows the fund to shift sector and quality exposures to better position for shifting market conditions. The strategy seeks to access new opportunities for dynamic income as macro environments change.
The MFS Active Short Muni Bond ETF (MFSX) is an actively managed municipal bond fund. It seeks to generate income exempt from U.S. federal income tax with a net expense ratio of 0.25%. The portfolio team uses a blend of bottom-up and macro analysis to select securities, keeping valuation and risk in mind. MFSX aims to maintain a dollar-weighted effective duration no longer than three years.
MFSD and MFSX join a growing MFS roster where several established strategies have been seeing strong momentum. For instance, the MFS Blended Research International Equity ETF (BRIE) recently crossed the $500 million AUM threshold. This international equity fund gained over $300 million in net flows over the past six months, as of September 8, 2026.
Expanding the Platform
MFS expanded its fixed income offering following the June launch of two equity ETFs. The company sees strong client demand for these strategies. Officials note that higher-quality, shorter-duration strategies can be compelling for investors hesitant to put money to work in a volatile environment. The launch adds to a growing roster of funds at MFS, including the MFS Blended Research International Equity ETF (BRIE). That international equity fund recently crossed the $500 million assets under management threshold. It gained over $300 million in net flows over the past six months as of September 8, 2026.
